Q: 1989 jeep wagoneer that I want to buy and will need a motor in a year? How much does one cost?
I want to buy this 1989 Jeep Grand wagoneer that supposedly runs well, but may need some motor work in a year and I want to replace it. This is a car that I want to drive and slowly restore over the next year or two. The cost of the car is 1750. there are 117000 miles on the car, and just a little spot of rust. Any suggestions? also any suggestions on where to get a third row seat to have installed in this? Thanks!

A: 89 Wagoneer... "XJ" (Cherokee body), or the "SJ" Grand Wagoneer (full sized) old large body Jeep SUV. Both are electrical nightmares and famous for not passing emissions testing. If that is a factor in your state. If you are planning to remove the engine and install it yourself and having a machine shop rebuild it. I would plan on spending $2000 assuming you replace ware items such as: water pump, complete tune-up, mounts, hoses, etc, etc, etc. If you intend to have it done, I would double that amount and then some depending where you have te work performed. If the Cherokee body is what your after I recommend buying a 1997 to 2001 with the 4.0l 6 cyl. That is the best, most reliable engine Chrysler used. Driving and restoring a vehicle at the same time is a chore. Good luck in what ever you decide.

Q: Is a diesel Jeep wagoneer a good car to convert to a bio-diesel vehicle?
I am searching for a Diesel Jeep Wagoneer that is in decent condition that can be converted to bio-diesel vehicle. Is it possible to convert?

A: If you are going to run already pure biodiesel, what you are really concerned about is the attack of rubber parts in the fuel system by the fuel, the biodiesel will eat up old style rubber parts but new rubber (viton) seals and teflon hoses or all metal fuel lines are impervious. So any newer diesel (don't know the exact year on Jeeps, sorry, but after 2002 should be OK) should be already fine, any older ones are going to need hoses, fuel lift pumps, possibly an injector pump rebuild ($$ maybe 400 $$) and proably a few fuel filter changes, the biodiesel will clean all the old sludge out of the tank and it will clog a few filters until it is all gone.

Q: What axles does my 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer have?
I have a 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with the AMC 360 5.9L V8 engine. Did these all come with the same axles? If so, what are the axles? If not, what are the options, and how do I tell which package I have? I suspect I'm running one Dana 44 and one AMC 20, but I'm not entirely sure. Thanks!

A: Most likely a Dana 30 front and 44 rear, But check here for axle housing ID info. www.stu-offroad.com

Q: Is it possible to put an alternative energy engine (ie hybrid or diesel) in an old Jeep Wagoneer?
We really love the old Wagoneer bodies, but aren't about to pick one up unless we can swap out the engine. Anyone know how we could do this, or even if? Also, what would the costs be?

A: This is going to cost a ton of money. Far more than you will ever save in gas expense. And you will still have an old vehicle.

Q: On a 1972 jeep wagoneer, am i supposed to have constant power to the voltage regulator?
also does anybody have a wiring diagram or know where to find one on the internet for free?

A: Yes, you will have power to the voltage regulator as long as the battery is in the vehicle. I'll check for the schematic. I checked and couldn't find one on-line. I am referring to my 1968 Dodge R/T service manual I don't have a 72 dodge book. Yours: Grumpy

Q: I have a 1987 Jeep Wagoneer and my friend lost the only key I had to start the vehicle. How do I get new ones?

A: I seriously doubt that the dealer has you key pattern on record from 20 years ago. Ask anyways, just in case. Back in the 80's Jeep used a standard GM lock cylinder for the ignition. A new one with two new keys is about $20 at NAPA and installation is usually 30 to 45 minutes. If you have a steering spring compressor (own, rent, borrow), you can do the job yourself if you have a Chiltons manual.

Q: will a 350 motor fit in a 84 jeep wagoneer?
I have 84 Jeep Wagoneer , auto, 4x4. It has a 2.5 in it , but can not find any motor's (2.5) for it. Thinking of putting a 350 motor in it . Will it fit?

A: yeah man you can stab a 350 into your wagoneer pretty easy and if you check out sites like www.bjsoffroad.com they sell motor mounts for fsj's to convert to 350 chevy motors and yeah it iwll fit you dont really have as many space issues and you can easily find parts for the 350 motor since it was so mass produced

Q: How do you get the serpentine belt on a 1988 Jeep Wagoneer (where the heck is the belt tensioner)??

A: there may not be a tensioner on that model!! if not you need to loosen alternater enough to slide either dirrection,, replace belt then re tighten the alternater, after you get it back in place!! must be held in tight position, with big screw driver or simalar, tighten bolts!! there should be no more than 1/2 inch movement in belt when proper!! or your alternater wont put a charge into the battery!! if not sure take to a shop!! should`nt be a big cost to do this!! good wrenching

Q: How do I change the fluid in the reservoir in 88 Jeep Cherokee Wagoneer?
My Jeep keeps over heating and I believe that I have very little fluid in the reservoir. It was over heated and I turned it off and it all came bubbling up and threw the cap..... I am very new to driving and I don't know a lot about how to fix things. What I need to know is how much of what should I add to the reservoir and how do I do it? Also any other possible explanations to my overheating would be helpful, thanks :)

A: need to fix over heating problem first blown head gasket worse scenario , water pump out next , easiest is fan belt loose

Q: Does anyone know how the 4 wheel drive on a Jeep Grand Wagoneer is activated?
Obviously the switch on the car marked 4wd, but is there any sounds or signs that verifies that the 4 wheel drive is engaged? I am not sure if the switch on my Grand Wagoneer is working or not.

A: Its a vacuum operated switch. and many times the cracked vacuum lines will render it(and the related dash light) completely useless. A quick test: Engage the switch, and drive a tight figure 8 in a parking lot. If the 4wd system is engaging, then you will feel the system binding up when you drive. Don't do more than a single figure 8, and release the system as soon as your are done. As driving in 4wd on dry pavement can do damage to the system. If having 4wd is important, start checking all the vacuum lines on the Jeep. Sometimes the vacuum leak isn't even in the 4wd system.

Q: I have a 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. How can I get it to pass auto emissions standards?
Without getting a new engine, is there something I can do with a 91 Jeep so it passes inspection. My mechanic says it won't pass without a new engine. It emits really nasty exhaust.

A: Could you afford to get an exhaust system, it's cheaper than buying a new jeep. If it has a catalytic converter on it, punch holes in it. that's the worst thing they ever invented! Our state doesn't even have the AET anymore! They did away with that dumb test years ago! Maybe your mechanic is trying to rip you off!

Q: I need to know if the power steering hose and pump are all one piece in a 1990 Jeep Wagoneer?
was told my power steering hose was leaking. I need to know if the hose is seperate from the pwr steering pump or are they all one piece?

A: That is correct. You can go to Auto Zone and see the part numbers. The high pressure or delievery line has fittings on each end and the return line clamps on to hose barb's with clamps on each end. Make sure you use oil cooler hose or similar and NOT vacuum hose for the return line. Good Luck,

Q: My 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer has issues with stalling and fuel injection. What is the problem?
Me and my dad rebuilt the Carburator, thinking the stalling would stop. Unfortunately, the car continues to stall. As of now, we are thinking the fuel filter or the fuel pump may need to be replaced. Also, when the car is accelerating, the fuel has trouble getting to the engine from time to time. These problems only occur when the car is already warmed up. We do not know what to do next, if you guys have any ideas, help me please.

A: Yeah look to that fuel filter first. They are often neglected. Then try the fuel pump. Considering the age of your Jeep one of those two may be bad.

Q: what is the best place to sell 89 jeep grand wagoneer?
are there any jeep speciality places that restore them that buy them?

A: well, generally, autotrader.ca will have it sold in a week... actually, i'm looking for a wagoneer, lol. of course, i live in ontario, and have no idea where you are selling from. i would say sell it to me, lol. ya, auto trader is a really good start, just creat an account, and there is an option to sell your vehicle on their home page. the really expensive wagoneers sit around for a while though. anything under 5 grand tends to go within the week. i would know. i've been whatching wagoneers on autotrader for a few years now (seems like a long time i know). if i knew the km's on it (possibly miles) and the condition, possibly a pic, i could probably tell you an estimate price. there used to be a guy who bought clean wagoneers and restored them to factory specs (based in California i believe.. too far for me). he did a beautiful job, bar none he was the best i'd seen. better than factory (unfortunately, he closed up shop a year ago). there is a good chance of selling in the states too. more people know about them there. here in ontario you almost never see them. personally i love them, they look so cool. anyways, hope this helps.
