Q: What kind of oil should I use with a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport?
What kind of oil should I use with a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport?
It has 4 wheel drive and it is automatic transmission. Thanks.
A: Use one of the high mileage oils. Stay away from Pennzoil and Quaker State as they seem to build up sludge in older engines. 10W30 in summer and 5W30 in winter.
Hope these answered your question.
Q: what is the cheapest and easiest way to replace lost car keys for a 1996 jeep cherokee sport?
I lost my car keys. Need to figure out what the easiest way to replace them. The car is a Jeep Cherokee Sport 1996.
A: Get the vin number off of your dash board and go to your local dealer. This is probably the cheapest way...a lock smith will cost big duckets. The dealer will cut you a new key for cheap.
Q: Why does my 1996 jeep cherokee shake terribly when it picks up speed?
My 1996 jeep grand cherokee shakes terribly when it picks up speed and it drives very bumpy the ride is no where near smooth. The shaking is so terrible the vehicle is hard to control. It only stops if the brake is pressed and the vehicle comes to almost a complete stop. Could the axle or tire rods have something to do with this?
A: There are many different reasons it could be shaking. One: It needs an alignment. Your tires may need to be rotated. Or sometimes, in some real bad cases, your going to need a new front end. I have 6 Jeeps and 5 of those have had these problems. I believe it was the way Jeeps are made. Be careful, they also have electrical problems.
Q: Is a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic Reliable?
Found a Jeep I am interested in. 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4.0 V6, 3 speed automatic, with 144,000 miles. New rear leaf springs, new rear brakes, and new battery. Is it a good deal for 2,400 dollars. Thanks.
A: I would take it. After checking it over of course. As said the 4.0 is an inline 6 not a v6.. and the trans should be a 4 speed AW4. If it is 4wd is could have an NP231 (part time) or NP242 (full time/ part time) transfer case. All of the drivetrain components are considered to be strong. Though since you are purchasing the vehicle with that many miles you can not be sure of the previous maintenance. XJs are know for lasting over 200K miles. My 91 XJ (4.0, AX-15, NP231) has 195K on it and still runs greats.
Check for exhaust manifold leak, rusted floor boards, sagging door hinges, cracked "frame" around steering box, working gauges, broken seat/seat frame.....
Q: is it possible for a 1996 jeep cherokee sport not to start after fueling up?
is it possible for a 1996 jeep cherokee sport not to
start after fueling up? This has happened twice in the last week while getting gas. vehicle ran fine prior to going to the gas station but open that gas cap and fuel up causes a 15-20 minute delay.
Any thoughts????
A: I had the same probelm once on my 94 Cheorkee. I went to get gas and it was running fine. Then filled it and it'd crank and crank and no start. Turns out the ignition coil was dead. Replaced it and all was well. Perhaps your is on the way out. Have your sparck checked when it won't start and I'll bet that the probelm.
Q: 1996 jeep cherokee wire hanging by transmission where does it go?
1996 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4 wire hanging by transmission where does it go? everything is working fine except the miles per gallon
A: To the other end of the wire hanging loosely...
Sorry couldn't resist
Q: Why won't my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2wd start?
Jeep Cherokee, 2wd, inline 6. When I go out and put the key in and leave the door open I can hear the alarm. If I leave my seatbelt off, I hear the alarm. However, if I turn the key to "start" there's a "click" and then the whole thing shuts down. Everything electrical just dies. The alarms go off. My headlights go off. Even the hazard lights go out. The only way to get everything back on is to disconnect and reconnect the battery and then all the alarms and lights work again, but if I try to start it, it conks out again. What in tarnation is going on with this thing? Starter? Alternator? Main computer thingy?
Turns out this was the problem:
What, you may ask, is that? That is the remains of an aftermarket security system and/or remote starter that the previous owner neglected to inform me it had. Apparently this was causing no end to the electrical gremlins that I'd been having for about a year. It is now (mostly) removed and everything is acting as it should. Thanks for posting, but this issue is now closed.
Sorry, bad link. Didn't know you couldn't do that here. You'd think Yahoo would play nice with Flickr, seeing as how they're related. Anyways, try this if you're curious.

A: two things have your starter and alternator tested also try replacing your starter relay switch
Q: I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee and I want to tune it up?
I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country 4.0 St v6
What parts do I need to change for
4L V6 to
A: well, cherokees haven't come with a v6 since '87. the 4 litre is an in line. a great engine at that. some spark plugs, new fluids, and some general lube should be good. try some injector cleaner (you pour it into your gas), maybe some upper cylinder cleaner. never underestimate the liquid cleaners! get a nice air filter (ie: fram or k&n). usually some garages have specials on spring tune ups, or winter tune ups. try a well known garage (like speedy, ar canadian tire, etc). hope this helps.
Q: installing a radio into a 1996 jeep cherokee?
Need help removing radio/dash bezel from my 1996 jeep cherokee country. Any help?
A: alot of the jeeps dash is held together by screws and interlocking tabs.you should be able to pop the plastic off just dont force it or you will break the tabs that hold that bezel on.
ive done it and replacement parts cost loot.if you have problems getting the radio out there is some times a anti theft brace in the back that is a bic*h to get to.
helpful hint:my glove box can be removed to help run wires.
Q: How do I permanently deactivate an alarm system on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2 L V8. I don't have the remote so I have to unlock it with the key, but I have to unlock the passenger's side first and then the driver's side, otherwise the alarm will go off until I unlock the passenger's side. So I just want to permanently disable the alarm. How do i do that?
A: lock all doors.then open lock with the key two times.now yow can open the door.put key in the ignition and star.in some cases you may need to repeat more than one time.hope this help.
Q: I have a 1996 jeep cherokee and the brake lights sometimes work when you step on brake, what to do?
The running lights work when you turn lights on but the brake lights only come on every 1 time for every 5 or 6 times you hit brake. Is it a short, and if so, how do i fix it?
A: I think the brake pads need to be changed, it have a bolt inside when it wears the bolt reaches the jeep body ( ground ) which closing the circuit and making the light on and off( at the beginning ) then on all the time.
Q: What would cause a 1996 jeep Cherokee to shake violently after hitting a bump?
Small bump, big bump - it doesn't matter. The entire truck shakes and the only way to stop it is to come to a complete stop. My gut tells me it is generating from the front passenger tire. My mechanic has looked at this several times, re-balanced and rotated the tires, and it is getting progressivly harder to drive this car safely. This is a great truck without any other mechanical or body problems. Has anyone else experienced this or have a probable cause for this problem? Thanks in advance!
A: You have death wobble. If you're already balanced the tires with weights on the inside AND outside of the rims you should check the track bar. A track bar that is not torqued down to factory specs. is a very common cause of death wobble. The steering stabilizer should also be replaced with a good after market one from Procomp, rancho or the like - they cost around $50.
Q: Help finding a Radiator for a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport?
I have purchased 2 after market radiators for this jeep. Both have Transmission Oil Cooler ports but my current radiator does not. Any one know where i can find a radiator without these ports?
A: The radiators with the ports on them will work in your jeep even if you don't use them. I had to replace the radiator in my jeep comanche and thought the same thing but it works just fine.
Q: I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country that idles roughly, and sometimes shuts off while idling?
I had a tune-up recently. Just wondering what could be causing it. Seems like the interior lights dim before it shuts off, could it be the battery? Also, I have to give it gas in order to get it to start. Any ideas?

These guys are the go to source for anything Cherokee!!! Trust me!!!!!
I believe the 96 cherokees were still a Rinex (sp) motor/electrical system they are notorious for having grounding issues, could be as simple as cleaning up a few ground contact points......but ask at the Cherokee forum I've attached.
Q: Why did my 1996 Jeep Cherokee instrument cluster suddenly stop working?
The speedometer, the fuel guage, and the mileage gauge all stopped working at the same time. What could be the problem? I would think it was wiring, but where?
A: Ryan has the right answer. I would look first for a blown fuse. If they are OK then I would pull the cluster and check the plug to see if it is tight. If that is OK then I would check the ground wire in the instrument cluster plug for continuity to ground. If that is missing then put an extra ground from your grond wire in the cluster plug to a known ground.
Hope this helps.
